Cladding and Screening

Cladding done properly breathes

Timber cladding fixed flat against a wall traps moisture and rots from the back. We batten out to create a ventilated cavity, install the right membrane behind it and detail the head, sill and corners so water leaves the wall instead of sitting in it. It costs a little more and it is the entire difference.

Exterior cladding

Shiplap, board and batten, and vertical or horizontal profiles in cedar, hardwood or pre finished board. Used on full facades, upper storeys and entry features.

Slatted screens

Free standing or wall mounted slat screens for privacy, shade and hiding services. Spacing and batten depth set to block the sightline you care about.

Interior feature walls

Slatted timber and panelling on internal walls, behind bedheads, in hallways and around fireplaces. Acoustic backing available.

Retaining walls

Treated sleeper and hardwood retaining walls with proper drainage behind them, built to hold the ground rather than slowly bow out.

Detailing that decides how long it lasts

  • Battened cavity behind every exterior board for airflow
  • Breathable membrane over the frame
  • Flashings at every head, sill and penetration
  • End sealing on every cut before it goes on the wall
  • Concealed or face fixed depending on the look you want
  • Corner and junction detailing planned rather than improvised
  • Oil, stain or paint finish, or pre finished board to remove the step

FAQ

Cladding and Screening questions, answered

What timber is best for exterior cladding in Melbourne?

Western red cedar is light, stable and holds a stain beautifully but costs more and dents easily. Australian hardwoods like spotted gum are tougher and heavier. Pre finished engineered boards remove the maintenance question entirely. We match the choice to your budget and how much upkeep you want.

Does timber cladding need maintenance?

Oiled and stained timber needs recoating every two to four years depending on how much sun and rain it takes. North and west facing walls need it sooner. Pre finished and painted board stretches that out considerably.

Can you clad over existing brick or render?

Yes. We fix battens to the substrate to create the cavity, then clad over the top. It is a common way to modernise a plain brick facade without rendering.

What spacing should slat screening be?

It depends what you are hiding and from where. Tighter spacing blocks more but reads heavier and costs more in material. We usually mock up a section on site so you can stand where your neighbour stands and see it for yourself.

Do I need approval for cladding work?

Replacing like for like usually does not. Changing the external appearance of a house in a heritage overlay usually does. We tell you which side of the line your job sits on.
