Decking

Deck builders who get the details right

A deck is only as good as what sits under it. We build on properly spaced bearers and joists, set the fall away from your house and use fixings rated for the exposure. That is the difference between a deck that still looks square in ten years and one that cups and lifts after two summers.

Merbau decking

The Melbourne default for good reason. Dense, hard wearing and stable underfoot. We pre oil boards on all four faces before laying so the ends do not drink water and split.

Australian hardwood

Blackbutt, spotted gum and ironbark for a deck with real depth of colour. Higher cost, longer life and a natural bushfire rating that matters on some sites.

Composite decking

No oiling, no splinters, no annual maintenance. Worth considering for pool surrounds, rentals and anyone who wants to build it once and forget about it.

Repairs and restoration

Replacing rotted boards, re fixing a bouncing substructure, sanding back a grey deck and bringing the colour back. Often far cheaper than a rebuild.

What goes into your deck

  • Site measure, levels and a scale plan before anything is ordered
  • Treated pine or steel substructure sized to span and load
  • Stumps, footings and bearer spacing to AS 1684
  • Concealed or countersunk stainless fixings depending on the finish
  • Fascia, steps, handrails and balustrade where the drop requires it
  • Two coats of decking oil or a factory finish on composite
  • Advice on whether your build needs a building permit

FAQ

Decking questions, answered

How much does decking cost in Melbourne?

Cost comes down to size, the height off the ground, the timber you choose and whether stairs or balustrade are needed. A ground level Merbau deck sits at the affordable end. A raised hardwood deck with balustrade and lighting sits well above it. We quote in writing after a site visit so you see the real number, not a per square metre guess.

Do I need a building permit for a deck?

Generally a deck under 800mm above natural ground level and not attached to the house does not need a permit in Victoria, but overlays, easements and heritage controls change that. We check your situation at the quote stage and tell you honestly if you need approval before we start.

Merbau or composite, which should I pick?

Merbau costs less up front and looks warmer, but it needs oiling every year or two and it leaches tannin for the first few months. Composite costs more to buy and almost nothing to own. If you enjoy the maintenance ritual, go timber. If you do not, go composite.

How long does a deck take to build?

A straightforward ground level deck usually takes three to five days on site. Raised decks with footings, stairs and balustrade run one to two weeks. Council approval, if needed, sits outside that and adds several weeks.

Can you build over concrete or an existing slab?

Yes. We fix a low profile subframe to the slab or use adjustable pedestals to get the fall right. It is a common approach for courtyards and balconies where height is tight.
