Pergolas and Verandahs

Shade, shelter and somewhere to sit

Most pergolas fail on one of two things. The posts are undersized for the span, or the roof was never thought through and the space is useless in a Melbourne downpour. We size the structure to the actual load and talk through roofing before we quote, so the space works in February and in July.

Attached pergolas

Fixed to the house over a deck, patio or back door. We flash the connection properly so water runs away from the wall rather than into it.

Freestanding pergolas

Standalone structures over a seating area, spa or outdoor kitchen. Useful when the roofline or eaves make attaching awkward.

Verandahs and patios

A roofed extension of the house with a finished ceiling, lighting and fans. The closest thing to adding a room without adding a room.

Carports

Covered parking that matches the house rather than fighting it. Built to the same standard as the rest of your carpentry.

Options worth deciding early

  • Roofing choice, from open batten to polycarbonate, Colorbond or insulated panel
  • Post material and size, timber or steel, and the footing depth each needs
  • Gutter and downpipe connection into your existing stormwater
  • Fans, downlights and power run in before the ceiling closes up
  • Privacy screening or blinds on exposed sides
  • Stain, paint or oil finish to match the house
  • Engineering certification where the span or wind rating requires it

FAQ

Pergolas and Verandahs questions, answered

Do I need a permit for a pergola in Melbourne?

Usually yes once it is attached to the house or over a certain size and height, and almost always if it is roofed. Rules vary by council and by overlay. We assess it at the quote and can arrange drawings and the permit application for you.

Can you match the pergola to my existing house?

Yes. We match post profiles, rafter spacing, roof pitch and colour to the existing build so it reads as part of the house rather than an add on.

Timber or steel posts?

Timber suits period and weatherboard homes and takes stain well. Steel allows longer spans with slimmer posts, which matters when you do not want a post in the middle of your entertaining area. We often mix the two.

How long does a pergola take?

Two to five days on site for most builds once materials arrive. If a permit is required, allow six to ten weeks before we can start.

Can you build a pergola over an existing deck?

Yes, provided the deck substructure can take the post loads. We check that first. Sometimes we run footings independently through the deck so the loads bypass it entirely.
